O’Halleran, Lenon discuss Prop. 206

PHOENIX — On Thursday, May 11, 2017 Congressman Tom O’Halleran (AZ-01) held the third in a quarterly Labor Series at IUPAT District Council 15-Local 86 headquarters. John Lenon, president Teamsters Local 752 met with the congressman to discuss implementation and enforcement of Arizona’s new mandatory sick leave under Prop. 206.

There are two parts to Prop. 206 – the first is the much-discussed minimum wage increase, and the second is mandatory employer-provided sick leave. The less publicized of Prop. 206 is the requirement for private and municipal employers to provide paid sick leave to all employees beginning July 1, 2017.
Implementing mandatory sick time may present challenges to employers given the many nuances of Prop. 206. President Lenon believes employers may not be prepared for the changes that are rapidly approaching, and sought help in preserving his memberships’ rights and protections under Prop. 206.
Congressman O’Halleran, although not totally certain of the implementation, assured John that he and his staff will put him in contact with the proper channels for enforcement.

Given the complexities of the new mandatory sick leave in Arizona, it is recommended that employers and unions begin reviewing their time-off plans and policies now in preparation of the July 1, 2017 deadline.
